| Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) | ||
| HPV is the Human Papilloma Virus, which a large family of viruses causing infections of the skin. There are only a few viruses (types) of the HPV family that actually affect the genital area of the body.
HPV can cause warts in the genital area, commonly know as Genital Warts, venereal or condylomata. In some cases a genital HPV infection can lead to abnormal cells of the cervix which if not detected or left untreated can lead to cervical cancer. HPV is a sexually transmitted infection that is widely spread in the United States. HPV has no symptoms; however, women infected with HPV can have an abnormal pap test or show the physical signs by displaying genital warts. A vaccine is now available for the four virus types of HPV that affect the genital and should be administrated to girls starting at age 9. If you're 30 years of age or older consult with Dr. Prewitt about having the HPV test done with your annual wellness visit.
